The Kelvedon branch of the Royal British Legion will be holding a number of events later this year to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War in November 1918. Marking this important occasion, the RBL will be creating a very special display of poppies at St Mary's Church in remembrance of all those lost and injured during the First World War from 1914 – 1918.
The plan is for a magificent display of cascading knitted poppies attached to special netting to be draped from the ‘battlements’ on the roof of the Chapel at the south east corner of St Mary’s close to the War Memorial and therefore visible from the road. It is also hoped to create a display around the porch if we have enough poppies. It is planned to install the display at the end of October in readiness for the special events being held at this time but particularly for the Remembrance Service on Sunday 11th November.
This is where we need your help….. in order to create Falling Poppies for The Fallen we will need lots and lots of poppies knitted or crocheted. We would like to encourage all local societies, clubs and groups in both Kelvdon and Feering and anyone who is keen knitter to take up the challenge of donating the wool and their time to help us by knitting a few poppies. Hopefully news of this appeal will spread and we will end up with hundreds of poppies. Perhaps those have never knitted or crocheted may see this as opportunity to learn.
Knitting and Crochet patterns are available at the bottom of this page, there is something to suit everyone whatever your skills. For more information on the Big Poppy Knit 2018, please email Hazel at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01376 570666. Poppies can be delivered to 4 Hunt Close, Feering or we can collect.
Take up the challenge – let’s make this commemoration really special – let’s get knitting!
